Recent efforts by community organizations and local leaders through projects like the city\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/greenvillejournal.com\/?s=Mayberry+Park\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Mayberry Park<\/strong><\/a> are bringing long-overdue honor and recognition to that history.<\/p>\n<p><iframe title=\"Mayberry Field Groundbreaking and History\" width=\"1160\" height=\"653\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/fnoSXLvJAu8?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"hometown-heritage\" style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Hometown heritage<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the days of segregation, Greenville was home to several Black minor league teams including the Greenville Black Spinners, Greenville Negro Red Socks, St. Anthony Braves and Greenville Negro All-Stars.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sterling High School, the first Black public school in Greenville, also had a baseball team that started in the 1950s. Many Sterling High Tigers players went on to play in the local minor leagues.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cBaseball was a huge part of the Black community,\u201d said Mike Chibbaro, a local historian and author. \u201cIt was the game played by the neighborhood kids. It was very much part of their culture.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chibbaro\u2019s book, \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/greenvillejournal.com\/?s=Voices+from+Meadowbrook+Park\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Voices from Meadowbrook Park<\/a>,\u201d chronicles the history of baseball in Greenville.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_347505\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-347505\" style=\"width: 332px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-347505 lazyload\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAIAAAAAAAP\/\/\/yH5BAEAAAAALAAAAAABAAEAAAIBRAA7\" data-src=\"https:\/\/greenvillejournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/Rico-Dawson.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"332\" height=\"482\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-347505\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><noscript><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-347505 lazyload\" src=\"https:\/\/greenvillejournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/Rico-Dawson.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"332\" height=\"482\" srcset=\"https:\/\/greenvillejournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/Rico-Dawson.jpeg 332w, https:\/\/greenvillejournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/Rico-Dawson-120x174.jpeg 120w, https:\/\/greenvillejournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/Rico-Dawson-90x131.jpeg 90w, https:\/\/greenvillejournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/Rico-Dawson-320x465.jpeg 320w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 332px) 100vw, 332px\" \/><\/noscript> Greenville-native Rico Dawson played shortstop for the Sterling Tigers and later the Greenville Black Spinners. He received a contract to play for the Indianapolis Clowns, which led him to become an extra for the movie \u201cBingo Long and the Traveling All Stars and Motor Kings.\u201d<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Greenville Black Spinners was the most notable minor league team in the area. Manning \u201cKingfish\u201d Clark, a local businessman, started the team in the 1920s with the help of Mark Durham. The team was born out of a need for recreational activities for Black youth and young adults in Greenville.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Several prominent players came out of the Greenville Black Spinners, including Rico Dawson, who played shortstop for the Sterling High Tigers. While playing for the Black Spinners, Dawson received a contract to play for the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Indianapolis_Clowns\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Indianapolis Clowns<\/a>. This opportunity led him to become an extra for \u201cBingo Long and the Traveling All-Stars & Motor Kings,\u201d a 1976 movie about Black baseball leagues.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another notable player from Greenville was Thomas Hallums, nicknamed \u201cBig Thomas.\u201d Hallums played for the Sterling High Tigers, South Carolina State University and the Greenville Black Spinners. He was inducted posthumously into the Greenville Baseball Hall of Fame in January.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Clark, Dawson and Hallums were posthumously inducted into the <a href=\"https:\/\/greenvillejournal.com\/?s=Greenville+Baseball+Hall+of+Fame\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Greenville Baseball Hall of Fame<\/a> in January. The men are the first Black members inducted, according to Chibbaro, who serves as the Hall of Fame\u2019s steering committee chair.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThey are individuals who made significant contributions to the game of baseball and the community, but because of <a href=\"https:\/\/greenvillejournal.com\/?s=segregation\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">segregation<\/a>\u00a0their accomplishments had long been overlooked and not well known\u201d Chibbaro said. \u201cIt was important to finally bring to light and recognize individuals like these who are just as deserving as their white counterparts.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Greenville Black Spinners, Sterling High Tigers and other teams played their home games at Meadowbrook Park, located on the south side of what is now <a href=\"https:\/\/greenvillejournal.com\/tag\/unity-park\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Unity Park<\/a>, after it was built in 1938. Photo by Megan Fitzgerald<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to \u201cVoices from Meadowbrook Park,\u201d Black teams could only play at Meadowbrook Park on specific days and couldn\u2019t use the stadium\u2019s locker rooms to change into their uniforms. Black spectators were also required to use separate concession and restroom facilities at the ball field.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 2020, the city of Greenville constructed Unity Park on the site of the former Mayberry and Meadowbrook parks. To honor the history of the former segregated park, the city is currently building a new Little League baseball field called Mayberry Park.
