A new affordable home by Habitat for Humanity of Greenville County and Juneteenth GVL is under construction in Greenville’s Nicholtown neighborhood.
Walls were officially raised for the inaugural Juneteenth Community Build on June 11. The project is part of Habitat Greenville’s Bridge Building Series, which brings people together to create more affordable housing.
“This is a perfect alignment for what our organization is doing in Greenville,” said Rueben Hays, the nonprofit’s founder and chair. “Juneteenth GVL is about empowerment and building for the future. There is no better partner to build with than Habitat Greenville.”
The nonprofit organization partnered with Habitat Greenville to do a build in honor of Juneteenth, which marks the end of slavery in the United States. The federal holiday is celebrated annually on June 19.
“As we celebrate Juneteenth, we recognize the importance of economic empowerment and equity in housing. Through this build, we are not just constructing homes — we are strengthening communities and creating lasting opportunities for families,” said Joseph Fields, vice president of equity for Habitat Greenville.

Volunteers began to build the framework for the affordable home after the ceremony on Wednesday morning. The other sponsors of the Juneteenth Community Build include Greater Greenville Association of REALTORS, Crescent Surgical Supply, First Baptist Greenville and Raymond Carolina Handling.
“Habitat’s mission always comes back to creating more affordable homeownership opportunities right here in our community. We do this by partnering with others,” said LaTonya Phillips, president and CEO of Habitat Greenville.
