Roman-style pizza joint Augusta Street Pizza will hold its grand opening Jan. 5. Since Dec. 15, 2025, it has been in its soft-opening stage, unleashing cheesy, crunchy and al dente delights in the suite at 2222 Augusta St.
The restaurant was founded by three New Yorkers — Nick Castronuovo, Carmelo “Carmine” Curra and Peter Lombardo — who decidead to bring new and family recipes to the busy corridor. Castronuovo and Curra met on Wall Street 30 years ago when they worked at the same firm. Drawn to the high-stakes environment, restaurants are their second act.
“Worst day of my life meeting that guy; he’ll probably tell you the same thing,” Curra joked. “But, nah, he’s like a brother. He and Petey are like uncle figures to my two boys.”
Fun fact: The Augusta Street Pizza mascot, Augusta la Strada, translates to “Augusta Street” in Italian and is modeled after Caesar Augustus. The restaurant primarily sells pizza by the square-shaped slice, but also serves sandwiches, rotating pastas and gelato.
We dropped in for the soft opening in December and tried the pepperoni pizza, hot sausage and broccoli rabe pizza, and penne and meatballs. If we could talk about all of them in detail, we would. For the sake of space, let’s focus on the penne and meatballs.
The pasta was perfectly al dente with a sauce that yielded bright, high-toned acidity. The meatballs were curious in the best way possible. To bite into an Augusta Street Pizza meatball — to cut into them, actually, because they’re monumental in size — is to take a bite of a soft, almost doughy meatball that tastes like it was cooked low and slow.
The contrast of the meatballs’ bready richness against the medium-textured pasta was nothing short of what you’d imagine you may get at an Italian American dinner table on Sunday.

Kitchen Sync now accepts reservations. The restaurant made the announcement in December. While it does still accept walk-ins, the reservations are an addition to the current model of operation. It has two locations — the flagship at 1609 Laurens Road and the recently opened location at 2420 Hudson Road in Greer.
