Having reviewed the proposed Greenville tree ordinance, the Carolina Foothills Garden Club strongly supports its adoption. We are pleased that it has been approved by the Greenville Planning Commission and will have first reading by the Greenville City Council on Monday, Jan. 11.
As stated in the July 30 Greenville Journal article, “Is Greenville losing its green?”, our city must be proactive in preserving what is left of our beautiful tree canopy. A stronger tree ordinance is essential to bringing this about. The proposed ordinance will not only help preserve the remaining tree canopy but may also lead to restoring trees that have been lost.
Tree ordinances in Atlanta, Charlotte, Columbia and Charleston have proven tremendously successful in protecting green spaces. We must act to protect Greenville’s heritage trees from the adverse effects of new construction as well as old age. This new ordinance will be consistent and fair to all affected parties while also protecting our remaining trees and keeping Greenville green.

For over 50 years the Carolina Foothills Garden Club has partnered with the city of Greenville to help protect and preserve the Reedy River, Falls Park and Cleveland Park for the enjoyment of current and future generations. We urge the City Council to adopt the newly proposed tree ordinance so that Greenville can continue to grow in a healthy and responsible manner.
