One new case of measles associated with the ongoing Upstate outbreak has been confirmed with more cases expected in the coming days, the state Department of Public Health announced Nov. 7.
This brings the outbreak total number of cases confirmed so far to 35, with a statewide total of 38 since July.
DPH reports it is still investigating potential exposures for this case and expects more cases to come in the days ahead from exposed family members of known previous cases.
According to the agency, there are currently 31 people in quarantine. The successful early quarantining as a result of an identified exposure is a positive public health outcome that has prevented additional community spread during this outbreak, DPH said in a statement about the latest case.
The agency is also reminding people that travel for the upcoming holidays greatly increases the risk of exposures for those traveling and for those accepting visitors and urges people to consider getting vaccinated now to prevent measles from disrupting holiday plans.
To increase access to MMR vaccines, DPH has activated a Mobile Health Unit to deploy to the following locations in the coming days to the vaccine to unvaccinated individuals at no cost:
- Nov. 12-13 — 12-4 p.m. at Lyman First Baptist Church, 80 Groce Road, Lyman
Since being deployed starting Oct. 16, the Mobile Health Unit has administered 31 doses of the MMR vaccine to 25 adults and 6 children.
